Son Finds Dad's Killer On Facebook After 23 Years

BAGUIO CITY—The quest for justice of a son for the killer of his father some 23 years back in Abanao Street, Baguio City could finally be granted with the help of the social networking website Facebook.
According to reports, a 49-year-old homicide suspect was arrested on May 23; some 23 years since he allegedly stabbed dead Ricardo Tumbaga on September 15, 1991.
Eduardo Olegario was arrested by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 7 Judge Clarence J. Villanueva. Olegario was finally arrested after the son of Tumbaga found his photo on Facebook and immediately traced his whereabouts on the widely popular social networking website.
After getting the needed information, the son contacted the police which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect in Upper Pinget, Baguio City. The suspect is now detained at the Baguio City jail while awaiting the trial.
Recently, Facebook has been instrumental in the arrest of some criminals in the Philippines. One of the most wanted criminals in Cebu province was finally arrested after almost two years of hiding.
He was busted after taking a ‘selfie’ and posting it on Facebook. Authorities arrested Niño Cueva, 20 at his hiding place in Brgy. Lapaz, Bogo City, Cebu province, Philippines in connection to his pending arrest order issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Rafael Yrastorza last 2012.
Yrastorza, a trial court judge in Mandaue City in the same province issued the arrest order in connection to a pending abduction with rape case filed against Cueva.
The Mandaue police said after the arrest order was issued, the suspect, who works as a habal-habal (single motorcycle for hire) driver went into hiding.
However, the police got a breakthrough when they found a selfie photo of the suspect posted on Facebook with the background of a big statue of the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
The police did research on the location of the religious statue and they found that it is located in Brgy. Lapaz, Bogo City, Cebu province. In coordination with the local police in the area they immediately conducted an operation which lead to the arrest of the suspect.

"BANGON TACLOBAN" The Song That Was Composed After Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan

VANESSA VALLEJOS in BANGON TACLOBAN
composed by: Trox D Salazar
Producer: Ivan Togonon
INFINITV EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTION

RP STUDIOS

We came to Tacloban by land carrying a truckload of relief goods, hoping to make this dire situation a little bit better.

But we felt that we had to give more than just material relief to the survivors.

We accidentally came up with this song while shooting a documentary.

We hope to uplift the spirit of the survivors through this song.
English Translation of the lyrics:

Rise up Tacloban
Don't be defeated
No matter how
Strong the storm

Wipe off the tears
And mud on your face
Just hold on tight
We will stand

Rise up to a new future
Be tough on the inside my friend
We will rise in the course of time
Rise up my Tacloban

My one request
And prayer
Justice for the victims
Will hopefully be heard

While we are united
In heart and emotion
We will never be broken
By any kind of wind

Rise up to a new future
Be tough on the inside my friend
We will rise in the course of time
Rise up my Tacloban

No matter the number of lives
You take away from us
You could flood my house
Crush it with the wind

I'll just stand up again
This is Waray-waray
We will not allow defeat
By any kind of storm

Rise up to a new future
Be tough on the inside my friend
We will rise in the course of time
Rise up my Tacloban

Groom Arrested Right After His Wedding

CEBU, Philippines - What could have been the beginning of a ‘happily ever after’ turned out to be the start of a couple’s journey through despair.
The couple exchanged vows in front of family and friends at the Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Church in Ronda town early yesterday morning, unmindful of the movements behind the church walls.
The kiss that sealed their marriage was what sealed the end of the groom’s time as a fugitive of the law.
With all exits of the church blocked, members of the Argao police swooped down on the groom, Angelito Tanaid, 39, by virtue of a warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court for four counts of attempted murder.
"We learned he was getting married so we decided to just wait for the ceremony to end before arresting him,” Argao Police Station chief Alejandro Batobalonos told The FREEMAN.
"He has been eluding arrest because he could not afford the P480,000 bail for four counts of attempted murder. Each count requires P120,000,” he said.
"She could only sit on the floor when we arrested the husband but she already knew about the cases he is facing,” Batobalonos said.
Tanaid was once a member of a gun-for-hire group in Barangay Anahaw in 2009. The group was involved in the killing of Police Officer 1 Julius Amarillo in 2004 but the members were cleared from charges two years later when a certain Nicanor Antiga surrended in 2006.
Tanaid, unfortunately, was tagged by the victims of other shooting incidents, thus, the attempted murder charges.

The International 4 (TI4) Is Declared As The Highest Prize Pool In The History Of E-Sports

The International 2014, the Dota 2 championship

In July, 16 Dota 2 teams will play for the biggest prize pool in esports history. The large prize pool is a result of player purchases of The Compendium, a virtual, interactive book that tracks tournament statistics and sometimes rewards player with cosmetic, in-game items. Each $10 Compendium purchase contributes $2.50 to the prize money for the Dota 2international tournament.

Valve released the Compendium for purchase on May 9th and started the International 2014 prize pool at $1.6 million. Thanks to player purchases of Compendiums, that prize money has increased to nearly $4 million at the time of this article.

Beyond offering greater monetary prizes to the best Dota 2 players in the world this July, Valve includes a number of rewards for the community as stretch goals are reached. Players have already unlocked prizes such as a new game mode and chat emoticons, but five of the thirteen stretch goals remain. At this point, the maximum stretch goal of $6 million actually seems attainable.

The International 2014 will take place from July 18-21 at Key Arena in Seattle. Tickets to the event were sold out within an hour, but hundreds of thousands of viewers are expected to watch the tournament live, if viewership of The International 2013 is any indication.

Thailand's Army Declared Martial Law, Says Not A Coup

BANGKOK (UPDATE) - Thailand's army declared martial law nationwide on Tuesday to restore order after six months of street protests that have left the country without a proper functioning government, but denied that it was staging a military coup.

While troops patrolled the streets of Bangkok, the caretaker government led by supporters of self-exiled former premier Thaksin Shinawatra was still in office, military and government officials said. Ministers were not informed of the army's plans before the surprise announcement on television at 3 a.m. (2000 GMT on Monday).

Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said the military was taking charge of public security because of violent protests that had claimed lives and caused damage. Nearly 30 people have been killed since the protests began in November last year.

"We are concerned this violence could harm the country's security in general. Then, in order to restore law and order to the country, we have declared martial law," Prayuth said.

"I'm asking all those activist groups to stop all activities and cooperate with us in seeking a way out of this crisis."
Prayuth had invited government leaders to a meeting at 2 p.m. (0700 GMT), an army spokesman said.

Both pro- and anti-government protesters are camped out at different places in Bangkok and the army ordered them to remain where they were and not march anywhere to prevent clashes.

The army also called on media not to broadcast material that would affect national security.

GOVERNMENT STILL IN CHARGE

The caretaker government, wary of the army given its past interventions on the side of the establishment, welcomed the move to restore order. It said it had not been informed about martial law in advance but it was still running the country.
"The government doesn't have a problem with this and can govern the country as normal," caretaker Justice Minister Chaikasem Nitisiri, told Reuters.

Thailand has been stuck in political limbo since Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin's younger sister, and nine of her ministers were dismissed on May 7 after a court found them guilty of abuse of power. An acting prime minister has since taken over.

The crisis, the latest instalment of a near-decade-long power struggle between former telecoms tycoon Thaksin and the royalist establishment, has brought the country to the brink of recession.

The military, which put down a pro-Thaksin protest movement in 2010, has staged numerous coups since Thailand became a constitutional monarchy in 1932. The last one was in 2006 to oust Thaksin, a billionaire who has lived in self-exile since 2008 but commands huge support among the poor.

The United States, which cut aid to its military ally after the 2006 coup, said it was monitoring the situation in Thailand closely.

"We expect the army to honour its commitment to make this a temporary action to prevent violence, and to not undermine democratic institutions," said U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki in a statement.

Army chief Prayuth had warned last week, after three people were killed in a gun and grenade attack on anti-government protesters in Bangkok, that troops might have to be used to restore order if the violence continued.

"The army chief was moving towards imposition of martial law ever since his announcement last week that the army would use full force if things get out of hand," said a senior army official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"He now feels that the police cannot handle security and is alarmed by grenade attacks and other incidents and the fact neither side looks like it will back down."

The army tried to mediate in the crisis late last year, bringing together then premier Yingluck and anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban. It has played down fears of a coup, stressing that politicians must resolve the dispute.

TROOPS PATROL THE CAPITAL

Troops stopped some traffic from entering the city and placed sandbags outside a city centre police headquarters, witnesses said. Soldiers had also secured television stations.

"We need cooperation from them to announce to the people 'do not panic, this is not a coup'," an army general said.
Ten satellite television channels, including stations run by pro- and anti-government groups, were ordered to stop broadcasting to "preserve peace and order".

The baht fell against the dollar in early trade but steadied later and dealers suspected that was due to intervention by the central bank. At 0346 GMT the baht was quoted at 32.48/50 per dollar after earlier trading at a low of around 32.64.
The stock market fell around 1 percent.

Acting Prime Minister Niwatthamrong Boonsongphaisan on Monday ruled out resigning as a way out of the crisis that is stunting economic growth, as the anti-government protesters stepped up their pressure to remove him and install a new administration.

Six months of turmoil, including a disrupted general election and violence on the streets, is dragging down Southeast Asia's second-biggest economy, which shrank 2.1 percent in the first quarter of the year.

Andrew Colquhoun, Head of Asia-Pacific Sovereigns at ratings agency Fitch, said the imposition of martial law was not necessarily negative for Thailand's government debt, and might even help break the political deadlock.

"The key factors for the ratings are whether Thailand can avert more serious and bloody political disorder, and whether we see a return to a fully functioning government that is able to make policy and pass a budget for the next fiscal year starting in October," he said.

ELECTION PLANS UNCLEAR

While the anti-government protesters want a "neutral" prime minister appointed to oversee electoral reforms aimed at ending Thaksin's influence, the government views an early general election as the best way out - the ruling Puea Thai Party would be well placed to win. But a vote tentatively scheduled for July 20 already looked unlikely to take place.
Opposition supporters disrupted a Feb. 2 election which was later declared void by the Constitutional Court. The protesters say they reject any vote before electoral reforms.

Jatuporn Prompan, leader of pro-government "red shirt" activists, said he and his followers would keep up their protest in Bangkok's western outskirts until the restoration of "democratic principles" leading to an election.

"That's fine," Jatuporn told Reuters when asked about his reaction to martial law. "We will stay here and continue our protest until the country is back to democratic principles, which will lead to an election and getting a new elected prime minister."

The anti-government protesters said they still wanted the caretaker government out.

"We will not march today but we will stay and continue the protest until we achieve our goal," anti-government protest leader Sathit Wongnongtoey told Reuters.

Weak exports and the political mayhem have damaged the economy, prompting the state planning agency to cut its forecast for 2014 growth to between 1.5 and 2.5 percent, from a range of 3.0 to 4.0 percent.

The Annual Tradition Of Filipinos..Operation Tuli (Circumcision) Every Summer

Tulì is a Filipino rite of male circumcision. It has a long historical tradition and is considered a rite of passage;[1] boys who have not undergone the ritual are labelled supót and face ridicule from their peers.
Circumcision is not considered a religious rite as most Filipinos subscribe to Roman Catholicism, which does not require it. A theory posits that the prevalence of the rite is due toIslam, which arrived in the islands 200 years before Christianity.
More affluent parents opt to have their children circumcised as neonates in hospital, but the majority prefer that their sons undergo the tradition at around 5–7 years of age. Boys of the same age group would either go to government-sponsored missions, hospitals, or to a local circumciser.
The Philippines Department of Health sponsors an annual Operation Tuli project to circumcise boys; others assist and provide the service for free.
The traditional circumciser would tell the patient to chew guava leaves and then simply cut off the foreskin of the boy with a sharp knife. The boy is then to wash off in the cold waters of a nearby river and to apply the masticated guava leaves as a poultice on the wound.
Newly-circumcised boys usually wear housedresses or loose skirts to help in the healing. The swelling that might occur during this period is termed pangángamatis, literally, "becoming like a tomato (kamatis)" owing to the reddish appearance of the penis.
